Onlookers watched in horror as Bay Story snapped it's leg in the final 140m of Race 3, the Lavazza Long Black Handicap at Flemington, Melbourne Cup day, 6th November, 2007. Bling Bling was brought down as Bay Story crashed through the barrier.
Bay Storys' jockey Mark Zahra was injured in the fall and taken to hospital with a suspect broken ankle. Bling Bling's rider Greg Childs was treated on the track, suffering non threating head injuries.
British trainer Brian Ellison ran to his injured horses side, Bay Story lay injured on the track with a snapped hind leg. Race officials quickly erected a screen around Bay Story, however is was very quickly apparent that nothing could be done for him and sadly he was put down.
For over 100,000 merry race-side goers awaiting the highlight event of the day, it was a sobering shock to their system and brought about the realization to many that horse racing does have it's horrific moments behind the glamor, graces, and party atmosphere that is associated with the sport of kings ... horse racing.
